I Am I My Brother s Teacher - 996 Words

Going through the material that we have read so far, I have connected with a lot that has been said. Thinking back on my own life experiences, it didn’t dawn on me until after reading or watching a film that I have experiences that fall under many of these concepts. Some that I have connected to the most is onlyness, micro-aggression, and model minority myth. Onlyness is a term from Harper Shaun’s â€Å"Am I My Brother’s Teacher?† and he defines it as â€Å"the psychoemotional burden of having to strategically navigate a racially politicized space occupied by few peers, role models, and guardians from one’s same racial or ethnic group†. For me growing up, I’ve felt like that so many times. I was in a private school that was predominately black up until the fourth grade then I went to public school and all the teachers were white. The transition between the two schools was hard as I was the only African-African student in my class and it continue to be like that until high school. I only had one African-African teacher during my time in high school and he was my gym teacher. He would always looked out for me since I’m one of the few black students that he sees in the hallways or in gym class. He was someone that many students including myself looked up too especially the black male students. He also knew how to encourage students to do their best and not to give up no matter how hard it would be.
